This weekend has kicked my ass, so I?m going to do the last night in bullet-point form.
* The Excitement at The Subway
- One man keys-over-pre-recorded-beats dynamo
- Cincinnati?s answer to Wesley Willis
- Every bit as quirky as predicted, with an extra dose of lovable
- Announced there was one band that inspired him to make music
- Proceeded to cover They Might Be Giants' "Subliminal"
* The Host at Below Zero
- Superb performance
- Band was a little quiet compared to others here this weekend
- Couldn't here much of Tim's guitar in the mains
- Chris?s vocals were clear and beautiful
- Steve and Marc, one of my fave local rhythm sections, powerful and precise as always
* CHETT at Buddakhan's
- Drummer gets MVP award for absolutely beautiful harmonies
- Intimate space was really rocking
- Had to leave before I instinctively ordered veggie pad thai
(Find tons of MidPoint photos and more fun stuff here.)
* Koala Fires at Know Theater Downstairs
- Bootsy sighting! (complete with amorous lady friend)
- Singer Matt Mooney later said how excited he was that Collins was grinding to HIS music
- Slowed-down version of "Voyager Two" was entrancing
* God Made Me Funky at Know Theater Main Stage
- Took the venue by storm from the word go and brought out the Funk in hundreds of attendees
- More bands should have their own intro song (on second thought, few could pull that off)
- Amazing musicians are the heart of the band, which could switch from Motown to Hip Hop on a dime
- Covers of "Another One Bites the Dust" and "Jump Around" were gratuitous
* Toads and Mice at Javier's
- Band has invented new genre: Mathgazer
- For folks that think Polvo was "too commercial"
- Dayton is the Chicago of Ohio
* The Sundresses at Subway Bar
- Basement feel of the venue fit them perfectly
- Jeremy said he would have spit beer into the crowd, but he didn't know the owners
* Captain of Industry at Subway Bar
- Earned a Math Rock merit badge by covering Deerhoof's "The Perfect Me"
- Closed the show with "Greater Than >" and "It Might Be Me" and brought the house down
- This show was my MidPoint money shot
* Random Notes
- Traded LSD stories with Brian Baker; he wins
-
Met "Javier" who said that regulars were complaining about the lack of
Salsa Night and he told them to chill out and get a life - everybody
reading this should go have a meal at his place and thank him for
donating his restaurant for the weekend- My sincere thanks to the
bands, organizers, volunteers, photogs and writers that bring this
beast to life and make this the best weekend of the year, every year
