It's been on the table virtually since they began playing together, but now it's official — amazing local Indie duo Bad Veins (playing live this Sunday at the Cincinnati Entertainment Awards) has signed a record deal. The twosome had been showcasing in New York City for labels on a regular basis and, really, it was only a matter of time.
The deal they've inked is with RCRD LBL, a non-traditional "label," to say the least. Here's the description from the label's site: "RCRD LBL is a network of ad-supported online record labels and blogs
offering completely free music streams and downloads from emerging and
established artists." The label is really on the cusp of the "new model," using the Internet as a means to break bands and charging nothing for the music. And there's no silly DRMs or anything to keep you from sharing or remixing or burning songs — or using them in any non-commercial way you want. The site pays artists via sponsorships sold to advertisers.
Bad Veins' first "release" has already "dropped." Go here to download the band's song "Gold & Warm." Kudos to the Veins! And Viva la Revolucion!

Hi Mike,
Did you see the recent article on RCRD LBL in the Wall Street Journal?
It said lesser-known bands signed to the "label" get paid $500 a song.
I wonder if this is a good deal for a band to sign away their music. Doesn't seem like a lot of money.
